Good Thoughts

Brain Dead? Sketches to the Rescue!

It happens to all of us sometimes, doesn’t it? A mental roadblock. A place you just can’t get past. Myself? – I get sidetracked. I start on one project, then I come across a little embellishment or piece of designer paper and my thoughts drift onto what I could do with those instead. Or….this little guy pops up and sits there waiting for me to hold him (and really, could you resist this face?).

Anyway, I digress. Pinterest is my go-to spot for inspiration and I find card sketches to be particularly helpful because it keeps your mind from narrowing in on certain colors and themes but still gives you a design to follow. And even though my finished product generally turns out significantly different than the sketch, it’s always good for giving me a starting point.

Here are a few cards I recently made by using some fun sketches I came across online. You will see what I mean about them turning out differently than the original sketch.

I used the StampinUp!’s new pre-printed watercolor card stock to make this first one. The chevron design across the bottom was already printed on the card and I added some old olive ribbon, candy dots from the “brights” collection, and stamps from the “Petite Petals”, “Lacy & Lovely” and “Banner Blast” sets.

The second one I like for its color combinations. I’m a big fan of the new patterned paper from the “Sale-A-Bration” catalog because they’re fresh and Spring-like. The stamped phrase is from the “Perfect Pennants” set.

This green base is also from the new watercolor paper. I used a big button from the “brights” collection and a rhinestone gem.  The stamp is from the “Feel Goods” set. (After looking at this again I wish I would have mounted the patterned paper on a couple pieces of coordinating card stock. Sigh…)

So the next time you’re not feeling particularly creative, try using a sketch and see what you can come up with.  I hope this post inspires you and I’d love for you to share with me something you made using this method. . I’ll even post it on a future blog post if you want to share your special creation with others.

Remember, I pin often so be sure to follow me on Pinterest to get fresh ideas of your own!

Happy stamping!
